ANDREWS, Tamra. Wonders of the air. Libraries Unlimited. 167p. illus. bibliog. index. c2004. 1-59158-105-2. $30.00. J

Andrews's creative addition to the Wonders of Nature series suggests humanistic teaching modes and experiments to explain the uniqueness of Ice Age animals, mirages, storms, rainbows, frost, and mist. Designed for grades 4-8, the text coordinates such simple physical principles as popping corn to illustrate the source of thunder and charting cloud types with facts drawn from websites. The choices of materials are sensitive to the limitations of elementary and middle school science labs and to the needs of beginning teachers. By incorporating artistic representations of the aurora, readings about Australian Dreamtime, the shape of a weather vane, and myths about the winds, the teacher can broaden the appeal of science lessons and meet the needs of various styles of learning. Contributing to the value of the text are a chart of the Beaufort Scale, a diagram of the water cycle, a map of the North Pole, and a Venn diagram depicting the intersections of myths, legends, and history. Recommended for middle school and public libraries and for the curriculum labs at teachers' colleges. Mary Ellen Snodgrass, Hickory, NC

J--Recommended for junior high school students. The contents are of particular interest to young adolescents and their teachers.
